Hồng Ngự city was established according to Decree No. 08 / NĐ-CP dated December 23rd 2008 by the Government and announced to be operational. Hồng ngự has 7 administrative units, of which An Thạnh ward is the center of economy – culture of the city, its two border communes are Bình Thạnh and Tân Hội.
Currently, Hồng Ngự is recognized as a four-grade urban center which is a place for exchanging economy, having cultural values of a Southern region delta. In the process of development, Hồng Ngự town still remains its own tradition of Mekong Delta.
The city has an area of 12,216.16 ha; its population is 78,704 people (20,034 households). Hồng Ngự city borders with Cambodia; Tân Hồng district to the East, Hồng Ngự district to the West, Tam Nông district to the South, and Pray Veng province (Cambodia) to the North.
With its advantages and domination position in the area, Hồng Ngự city is identified as one of three urbans of Đồng Tháp province with the road corridor of National Route No.30 from Thanh Bình, Hồng Ngự city to Hồng Ngự district and Tân Hồng district.
With such importance, Hồng Ngự city has been identified by the province as the northern key economic zone of the province in terms of agriculture and border economy which not only have a range of influence in the province, but also has the potential to influence the area that is increasingly developing, contributing to the development of the entire economic area of Đồng Tháp Mười (Plain of Reeds) and the Vietnam-Cambodia border area.
