The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment surveys key irrigation projects in Dong Thap province

In the afternoon of May 8th, a delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, led by Minister Trinh Viet Hung, visited and surveyed the Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate - a key irrigation project in Dong Thap province that aims to prevent drought and saltwater intrusion to protect agricultural production in the Bao Dinh project area. Nguyen Hoang Hiep, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment, also attended the team.

The delegation was welcomed by Mr. Nguyễn Phước Thiện, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, as well as leaders from provincial departments, and the Kim Sơn commune government.

The survey team from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is at the Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate's central control room.

The Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate project on the Nguyen Tan Thanh canal began building in November 2022, with a total cost of more than 518 billion VND, and was put into operation from November 2024.

The Nguyen Tan Thanh canal water control project in Dong Thap province improves water storage and generation, controls tidal surges and saltwater intrusion, and regulates water resources for agricultural and industrial production across 12,000 hectares. Simultaneously, it supplies raw water to water treatment plants in the region, which serve 1.4 million people in Dong Thap province. The project's operation avoids the need for temporary dams to prevent saltwater incursion during the dry season in Dong Thap province.

Following a field survey, Minister of Agriculture and Environment Trinh Viet Hung praised the project's effective operation in ensuring water security, adapting to saltwater intrusion, and promoting agricultural production and people's livelihoods in Dong Thap province.

Minister Trinh Viet Hung requested that Dong Thap province continue effectively utilizing the project, enhancing agricultural production value while adapting to climate change; at the same time, the province needs to soon summarize and comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of the project after two years of operation in economic, social, and environmental aspects to serve as a basis for proposing to the Central Government to invest in more irrigation projects in the area to complete and modernize the irrigation system, contributing to ensuring water security and serving sustainable agricultural production development for the province in the future.
